| DID JESUS MISQUOTE DEUTERONOMY? |
| Deuteronomy 6:13.Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him,
and shalt swear by his name.(KJV)
Matthew 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. (KJV)

| When it comes to quotes, one cannot reasonably claim a contradiction unless what is said has significantly different meaning between the two verses, which this one does not. The critics have not objected, that I've seen, about the change of 'fear' to 'worship', but the actual word used in Deuteronomy means 'revere' (Hebrew 'yare', Strong's #3372) anyways, and that's essentially the same as 'worship'. The complaint is the addition of the word 'only', which does appear in the original texts of Matthew but has no counterpart in Deuteronomy. But since Jesus taught that you cannot serve two masters (Matthew 6:24), his changing 'worship God' to 'worship God only' is not significant. By His teachings, if you worship God, then you worship God alone. Not a contradiction. |
